SNORING – A ROLE FOR THE GDP
Presented by
Dr AMA JOHAL, BDS, MSc, PhD, FDS, M ORTH., FDS(Orth), RCS.Eng
This course is suitable for all healthcare professionals and in particular:
- General Dental Practitioners
- General Medical Practitioners
- Practice Managers
Although the course has been conceived with GDP's in mind we also feel that the practice staff have a key role to play in educating the public as to the availability of treatment. With this in mind an option exists for GDP's to bring key practice staff to all or part of the day.
Equally as the public currently consults GP's with snoring problems the course is also open to General Medical Practitioners and Solutions 4 Snoring is keen to encourage GDP's to work in partnership with their local GP's.
The Opportunity to Help Your Patients!
Approaching half of the UK population are negatively affected by snoring. The vast majority of patients and their families suffer in silence as they cannot usually by treated by their GP and sleep specialists focus primarily on severe obstructive sleep apnoea. Unfortunately the epidemic is worsening, age and weight are key contributing factors in sleep disorders and the UK population is both ageing and experiencing record levels of obesity.
However for 90% of snorers and mild sleep apnoeics a simple consultation followed by the correct prescription can result in a dramatic increase in quality of life. As a practising GDP you could offer a solution to large numbers of your patients.
Snoring has a profound negative physiological and sociological effect on patients. Apart from the obvious tension in relationships and friction between partners, the health risks to snorers can include :- Reduced energy, increased risk of Diabetes, elevated blood pressure, increased risk of cardiac problems, increased risks from driving while tired and elevated stress levels.
