There are a number of readily available “off the shelf” products, which purport to offer a snoring treatment. As far as we are aware these treatments are not clinically trialed and do not involve contact with a trained healthcare professional.

Nasal straps
Designed to stick across the nose to flare the nostrils and allow increased air intake while sleeping. The issue for snorers is not the amount of air in the airway, but the tendency for the tissue in the airway to vibrate, so the strips have little or no proven effect.
Chin straps
Designed to hold the mouth closed during sleep this options does not directly address the area where snoring occurs and is also not an option if you have difficulty breathing through the nose. Little or no clinical data supports the use of chin straps to stop snoring.
Throat sprays
The thinking behind sprays is that the throat is coated in order to reduce snoring. Independent clinical data suggest there is no clinical data to support this type of treatment. This type of treatment is expensive as a container lasts approximately a month equating to an annual cost of £150 per year.
Lavender pillows
This is a charming but misleading concept as it does not address the problem of snoring and there is no supporting clinical data.
Singing exercises for peaceful sleep
There is no clinical data supporting the treatment of snoring by singing alone. Singing exercises may strenghten the muscles, however as the airway changes when we are asleep, singing alone will have little or no impact.
Alternative home solutions
Ideas that using tennis balls in bras (worn on the back), a kick from the partner or the use of ear plugs are old wives tales. They overlook the fact that by waking the snorer he/she will be exposed to the other health related issues of fatigue, poor performance at work and driving while tired.
